Working with textures
In some maps only one texture is used and that looks a bit boring. In this tutorial I want to give you some advice in texturing. For this take the room of the last tutorial. First of all we will select all four walls (hold shift, click on each brush): After that we will shorten them for 32 units: Copy the brushes and move them, right under the other four walls, you've just shrinked: Go to Afterwards click on the texture called border11_250, like on the screenshot above. Perhaps you ask yourself why this texture has a white border. That means that it has a "shader" which will add effects to it. But I will explain the shaders later. Back to the topic! It looks something like this: We select the four walls again and scale them down like before: For the next step copy them and place the copied brushes at the top, above the others. Then click on textures, scroll down until "sfx" and click on it. Open the "Texture Manager" again and select the "border11c" texture, more in the middle of the texture list: Actually it looks fine like that, but I don't want to have the lights on the texture. That's why we press shift+Upper arrow key until it looks like here: Deselect all brushes, select the brush which stands for the floor and cover it with the "diamond2c" texture out of the base_floor folder. Now do the same with the ceiling but with another texture (should be a darker one, since the walls are pretty bright): In my opinion the room looks a bit empty. Let's create an object in there. For example a box with a different texture on the upper face. So create a new brush somewhere in the room: Go to As you can see, the texture doesn't fit to the brush, but we can fix this by pressing s to open the "Surface Inspector" and then clicking on "Fit". Always press "Apply" after you've changed something in the "Surface Inspector". The texture should now lie correctly on the brush. We also can put the texture four times onto the brush. For this little step open the "Surface Inspector" again and then click once on height and once on width, then on fit and apply. If you click on V Shift and H Shift you can move the texture. If you click on V Scale and H Scale you will stretch the texture vertically or horizontally. If you want to select one face only, press shift+Ctrl and click on one side of a brush. For selecting more than one face press shift+Ctrl+Alt and move over the sides you want to texture. Selected faces only appear in red, without lines. For example: Select the upper side of the box via shift+Ctrl and use another texture for it. Afterwards fit it on the face. For the last step compile your map like you've learned in the tutorial before and play it. Here you can get the maps for this tutorial (put it into baseq3/maps): |
